Accountability, Wearables and the Wisdom to Use Data Well
Back in my marathon-running days, I wore a big Garmin watch on my wrist every day. At the time, that wearable tracked my pace, measured my heart rate (when I remembered to wear the chest strap!), and let me know when I was pushing too hard.
Today, wearables do so much more.
Modern devices can track your heart rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate, workout strain, recovery status, sleep duration, and even sleep quality. Some platforms now include AI-powered coaching that can adjust an existing workout or build a personalized training plan based on your unique data—your height, weight, schedule, recovery, sleep patterns, and more.
The amount of information available is incredible. In fact, there's often so much data that many people aren't quite sure what to do with it all!
And that's where things can get tricky.
It's easy to start checking your watch before checking in with yourself. You wake up feeling great, but your recovery score says otherwise. Or you feel tired and sluggish, yet your wearable insists you're ready for a hard workout. Like I say, "check yourself before you wreck yourself!"
My husband and I both use the WHOOP, and this summer we've been checking in with each other after our morning prayers to review our data and reflect on our habits. The practice has been both eye-opening and empowering, helping us identify patterns and make more intentional choices throughout the day.
Several members of our family use the device as well, and it's been fun to encourage one another in building healthier habits. What could easily become just another stream of data has instead become a tool for accountability, conversation, and growth.
While these tools can provide valuable insights, they can also tempt us to believe that more data always leads to better decisions. Sometimes we become so focused on tracking our health that we lose touch with the simple wisdom of listening to our bodies—and ultimately, listening to God.
Data is a tool, not a master. It can inform us, but it was never meant to replace discernment, self-awareness, or trust in the rhythms God designed for our bodies.
